2018 Fantasy Baseball Excel Cheatsheets (Roto and Points Leagues) | Version 1.0

I’m not dead yet. I know there was some concern about whether I’d be publishing anything in 2018 due to the lack of updates thus far but, look, here I am updating and posting a thing. A very important thing in fact! This thing I’m publishing today is why the site has cheatsheet in its very name. Yup, here are the beautiful 2018 cheatsheets in all their glory and they are free for download as always.

Last year was a big year of overhauls for these Excel cheatsheets as I implemented countless new features and made it so the cheatsheets could be used on both Mac and Windows machines. This year, we’re rolling ahead with those versions as they worked so well last year.

Fire up your latest version of Excel and let’s dive into these crazy monster spreadsheets.

What Makes These Cheatsheets Special?

Gosh, that’s a good question. At their heart, they are designed to accommodate almost any off-the-wall variation of a fantasy baseball league that you play in. Do you play in a 10×10 roto league with lots of wacky categories? Yeah, this will cover that and cover basically any league you throw at it. The spreadsheet takes your league settings and generates player values based on your league so you know what a player is worth in that league world. Once the draft gets going, you can keep track of it in the spreadsheet and it will update projected standings and rosters for you so you can analyze the crap out of your league in real-time.

Also, there’s just tons of options in this spreadsheet when it comes to different projections to look at or auction values or whatever you want to know from various places around the internet.

What’s Changed From Past Years?

For those that missed last year’s updates, here are some of the highlights:

  • For straight drafts, the cheatsheet tracks draft order now. As you enter picks, it automatically will fill in who thinks has the next pick based on your settings. This allows for there to be a draft history in a tab now. This also means you can trade draft picks within there.
  • Since the cheatsheet tracks draft picks and order, you can also now enter keepers in separately so they don’t affect draft order.
  • During the draft, instead of scrolling around, you can enter all picks at the top of the page now by choosing the teams and players drafted and clicking Make Pick. Or, you can enter picks into the Draft Log directly if you wanted. You’ve got a few options.

What Data Am I Pulling In?

There’s a ton of data in here and most of it isn’t mine. So I owe a big thanks to all of these sources.

  • Projections Sources: Steamer, ZiPS, Fangraphs, Clay Davenport
  • Average Draft Position Sources: FantasyPros, CBS, ESPN, Fantrax, Yahoo, NFBC
  • Auction Values Sources: FantasyPros, CBS, Yahoo, RotoChamp
  • Expert Rankings Sources: FantasyPros, Yahoo, CBS, ESPN

WERTH Values (Roto Leagues)

If you’re playing in a roto league, you may notice that these cheatsheets have a WERTH value for each player. These are essentially z-scores in each roto category based on your league setting. The cheatsheets calculate who the projected league starters would be and then use that to calculate league averages and standard deviations in each category. Using that data, it then says how far above average each person is in that category (z-score) so a positive WERTH value means that player will contribute positively for your team. This is all dependent on your league settings which makes these values completely unique to your league.

Troubleshooting

In the interest of getting these out into the world as quickly as possible, I admittedly didn’t get a chance to utilize beta testers this year. So, please let me know if you encounter bugs or issues with the sheets as you play with them. In the month ahead, I’ll work on addressing those as well as trying to optimize these spreadsheets to run faster (I know these initial versions are a bit bulky and may run a bit slow). You can keep track of my spreadsheet updates by following my Twitter where I’ll let you know when updates happen.

Donations

I’ll be honest. These take a ton of work. I want to keep these free. I know there are resources like mine out there that charge money but I’ve never wanted to go down that road. That being said, donations help keep this site afloat and keep me wanting to come back and do these each year so I’d appreciate any small donations you’d give to help fuel my coffee addiction and such. If you’re cool with that, punch the donate button below:

Hope you all enjoy the sheets and have a great 2018 season!

Hi Luke. Thanks for the sheets. Our League has been looking for software to project as a draftboard on our screen at the draft and your sheet lists things just the way we do it so thank you. Question, is there a way to put our team logos instead of team names and a way to show the bid price next to the player’s name on the roster page? Thanks

Great spreadsheets! I was wondering what the highlighted players in grey mean in the “2018 Roto Draft Cheatsheet v1.01 – Your Roto Draft.” (For example, Clayton Kershaw is highlighted in grey but Trout isn’t.) I have been looking everywhere for a key that would explain it but I couldn’t find anything.

    John,

The guys in gray are the pitchers.

Wow am I happy I stumbled upon this site! Your sheets appear to have everything I’ve been looking for! Is anyone else having issues with the auction sheet? For some reason it will not let me edit any of the settings for my draft and has been crashing on me when I switch tabs 🙁

Try downloading version 1.00 of the sheet. Just copy the link to the 1.01 version, paste it in a new tab and change the .01 to .00

Oops, that’s still version 1.00. I’m not having a problem with it. Did you enable editing and macros for the sheet?

Any update on when the 2018 Printable Tier cheatsheet will be available?!?!?!? I heavily rely on that each year….. thank you!

Just downloaded the Roto Auction sheet for the first time this year – wow! This thing is amazing. Will definitely be donating.

One question: Is there a way to utilize this sheet throughout the season to analyze potential acquisitions and trades? Or do you produce another sheet for monitoring in-season stats and fluctuations in relative player value? If not, any suggestions in this area would be great (first year in a keeper auction league).

    Thanks!

I don’t know how this was the first year I found this site, but thanks a lot for your hard work Luke!

Quick question: on the credits page, I can see the date of the most recent update for ADP, Rankings, and Projections – it’s mostly from early March. Does that get updated, or is there a way to update that before draft time? For example, I’m in a keeper league and have Justin Turner – his value surely just took a hit, given his broken wrist, and Logan Forsythe’s (his replacement) value surely increased a great deal. It’d be great to update the underlying data once more before draft time (which is in ~50 hours for me).

Thanks again – I’ll be donating a fraction of my winnings for your work, and I’ll be back next year regardless.

I’m an idiot. I’ve imported more recent exports of the data. Thank you!

How do you add draft rounds to keepers that you have entered?

  • Brandon
    03/23/2018 at 4:09 PM

You can update positions via the ‘Save and Load’ tab within the workbook

      Never mind that didn’t work

One problem I have is once a player is placed in a roster spot I can’t move them to the bench or swap a different player in for them at that position. For example, your sheet put Ryan Zimmerman on my bench and Ian Desmond at 1B. It also filled all my open OF and DH spots. I need to move one player out of a DH spot, move Desmond into that spot, and move Zimmerman to 1B. But I have no way to move anyone to the bench.

Thanks for pointing this out. I fixed the issue. Try downloading again. It should be Version 1.51 now.

When using the roto draft cheatsheet, the ‘your roto draft’ tab seemed to get ‘stuck’ at pick 99 – I tried a few things, including trying to manually fix it in the draft log tab – manually selecting via dropdown, entering current pick spot, etc. – it just didn’t want to go to 3 digits – very strange

This was about a week or so ago, so it appears a few versions since then –

Has anybody else had the same issue?

I have another draft this evening and trying to decide if I want to take the chance of using this or not

    Thanks

Honestly, I’ve gone through a few drafts myself with that sheet and haven’t seen that happen. I assume you’re on the Your Roto Draft tab and make the 100th pick but it just doesn’t process it, is that right? I’d try downloading the latest sheet (v1.50) to see if you have the same issue there.

Im trying to add OPS and XBH into the Roto categories, but I keep gettng “The data you entered in cell C10 violates the data validation rules set on this cell.” Im using google sheets, does that affect the editing process of the sheet?

    • Luke Gloeckner
      03/25/2018 at 5:27 PM

I would imagine. These cheatsheets are designed to work in Microsoft Excel. I haven’t tested them in Google Sheets but there are is some code built into them that would likely only make them able to work in Excel.

dang, well thats fine, I really dont want to have to buy excel lol so ill just use the rankings mostly.

Would it be possible to sort by position adjusted werth?

    • Luke Gloeckner
      03/25/2018 at 6:57 PM

That was an oversight on my part. I don’t have that built in as one of the sort options, no. Sorry about that.

        03/25/2018 at 7:11 PM

No problem! Another nice feature would be the ability to update eligibility – e.g. Rizzo for 2B, Machado for SS.

          03/25/2018 at 7:13 PM

There’s an option to change a player’s primary position (the Change Position column on the Draft tab or double-click on the player on the Rosters tab once they’re drafted)

Hi new to your site, looks good, noticed i can’t find troy tulowitzki tor ss on it, anyway we can add a player to the spreadsheet?

  • Dexter Bobo
    03/28/2018 at 10:49 AM

I’m finding the Change Position function to be very buggy. Just as often as it works correctly, either nothing happens or the player on an adjacent row’s position is changed instead. Also wondering if you will be releasing your Special Blend projections as a stand alone download? Thanks.

I have my own Shi*** version that I use to track throughout the season that I wish was this smart.

First I would like to say great job and awesome spreadsheet.

I do have a question about keepers and minor leaguers. I am using the Roto Auction Cheatsheet and I can’t see how to add minor league keepers but have their position be bench. When I add them via “Your Roto Auction” tab, it puts them as active based on their position and I can’t change the position to Bench which is where they should be as they are not on an active NL roster (we are NL only). When I use the “Auction Log” tab, I also cannot enter a position. Am I missing something or can a “bench” position be added to the “Your Roto Auction” Chng Pos field?

    Thanks!!!
