A few weeks back, the first version of the fantasy baseball cheatsheets were released into the ether. There have been a number of minor requests, bug fixes, and ideas that the community has suggested since that time. There were also a couple big free agent signings since that time. Like, hey, I heard that Bryce Harper guy signed with a team! Needless to say, it’s time for an update to the 2019 sheets.
If you are completely unfamiliar with the cheatsheets themselves, it may be more helpful to read over the post about their initial release first. For the initiated, let’s talk about what’s new in this version.
What’s New In Version 1.50?
In this iteration of the cheatsheets, there are a number of normal data updates but I also addressed some suggestions that people made in the comments. Here are the new things that you will find in the sheets as you open them up:
Updated in all three versions
- ZiPS projections are now in the sheet
- The first draft of my Special Blend projections are in the sheet. I’m saying “first draft” because I plan to tweak some things with these in the days ahead that may result in them changing a bit. I’ll be posting the “official” version to the site when that process is done. For the moment, the projections are using the weighting system from last year.
- Yahoo ADP is now in the draft sheets
- All ADP, projections, rankings and auction data that were already in the sheet are updated
- From this update on, Player Notes will be able to be carried over in Save/Load
- You can now enter custom Note Types on the Player Notes page instead of choosing from a list
- Players that have signed to teams are now on their new teams
- Player notes about injuries have been added in
- For roto leagues, three pitching categories were added in (BAA, Games Finished, IP-ER)
- Various bug fixes and tweaks
Updated in Roto Auction sheet
- A team’s total initial value is now visible on the Teams page
- On the settings page, you can choose to do a global inflation amount for your league. If you feel the projected values are too high or low for how your auctions go, this will allow you to adjust the amounts across-the-board
Updated in Points Draft sheet
- Added a player’s ranking in projected points as a column to the Draft page
I still have a number of updates in mind but this version should address most of the big things that have come up in the comments over the past few weeks.
Which Data Am I Pulling In?
In addition to what was mentioned above, you have lots of options when it comes to data in these spreadsheets. Here’s the updated list of the different sources of information you can find inside:
- Projections Sources: Steamer, Fangraphs, Clay Davenport, ZiPS, Mr. Cheatsheet’s Special Blend
- Average Draft Position Sources: FantasyPros, CBS, ESPN, Yahoo, Fantrax, NFBC
- Auction Values Sources: FantasyPros, CBS, ESPN, Yahoo, RotoChamp
- Expert Rankings Sources: FantasyPros, Yahoo, ESPN, RotoChamp

The cheatsheets come in three different flavors. There’s a draft and auction version of the cheatsheet for roto leagues (this includes head-to-head category leagues) and there’s a version for points-based head-to-head league drafts.

Troubleshooting
My hope is that these should be operating flawlessly but, of course, you may notice strange things in the sheets as you use them. Let me know about these bugs that you find and I’ll perform minor updates on the sheets to fix them as needed. You can keep track of these smaller spreadsheet updates by following me on Twitter where I post about any minor updates that may happen. Also, pay attention to the “current version” above to see when I may have uploaded the latest fix.
As new cheatsheet updates are released, you’ll want to utilize the Save Or Load page in the cheatsheet to copy and paste your custom data into new updates. Your player notes from the previous version will not carry over in the save/load process but they will carry over to future versions now. Also, any current player notes in the sheet may be erased during the save/load process due to this update. Let me know if you have questions about that.

03/06/2019 at 12:23 PMLuke – when I go to update the spreadsheet to adjust my own “custom combination” projections – I am met with a huge issue that essentially doesn’t calculate a WERTH figure for many players – especially impacting closers.
I think this is due to the ZiPS projection not projecting saves. From my experience, I noticed the same issue (relievers not getting WERTH values calculated) when I input ZiPS projections into version 1.0 of your workbook a few days ago. I think this is because ZiPS on Frangraphs does not project Saves for some reason. I had to export that dataset into excel, then I exported Steamer projections and did a v-lookup to pull Steamer save projections into ZiPS projections to atleast have some valuation of relievers relative to their peers.
I hope this can help you in some way. I still can’t figure out why some players do not get a WERTH # calculated whenever you try to combine different projections. I will just use your “special blend” for now – I always like to try to aggregate as many projections as I can. Can you divulge what the mix % of your “special blend” projections are?
Thanks as always!
Dom

03/06/2019 at 12:26 PMI have a replacement to take the average of other projections to cover the fact that ZiPS doesn’t project saves so it shouldn’t cause an issue but I’ll look into it… This is happening in version 1.50 as well? The mix of my special blend varies by stat. Each stat is weighted differently based on which projection systems were best for that stat in past years.
Dom
03/06/2019 at 12:36 PMYes – seems to be happening in V1.5 as well. It’s basically any time I choose a custom combination things seem to go wacky. I am just going to stick with your Special Blend then. It seems you put in just as much work as I do to aggregating data from various sources. I just hate to be overly reliant on one projection system and ignoring others. If you are blending what has historically been the best by stat – I am more than comfortable using that.

03/06/2019 at 2:34 PMLooks like Mondesi gets lost a bit. He shows up in the player tab but not on the position rankings and he’s way down at the end of the list for draft log tab when sorted by ADP.
Luke Gloeckner
03/07/2019 at 1:40 PMIssue should be fixed in version 1.55 that I just uploaded.
Taylor
03/06/2019 at 3:08 PMI have found an issue with assigning of players to outfield positions. If they have more than one eligibility (LF,CF,RF) they not assigned to on open slot and then get sent to the bench. Is there a fix for this?
AH
03/06/2019 at 3:15 PMThanks for this. For some reason, my NL-Only auction sheet isn’t pulling Sonny Gray into the positions list, and I can’t see his projected WERTH anywhere, either.

03/06/2019 at 3:30 PMIs there a way to copy my information from v1 to this version?
Luke Gloeckner
03/06/2019 at 5:34 PMDid you try the instructions on the Save/Load tab? You copy the data from the old sheet and paste it into the new one on that page. Let me know if that’s not working though.
Don Ready
03/06/2019 at 7:25 PMFirst, I’m in awe with how wonderful this is!
Second, copying over is getting an error message: “This action won’t work on multiple selections”

03/07/2019 at 10:08 AMWorks for me, just had to click through on the cell first a few times and try copying a few times. Thanks Luke. You are a gentleman and a scholar!

03/06/2019 at 5:04 PMThank you for the update. I am having an issue where the ESPN live draft data doesnt seem to match what it says on their site. It has Mike trout at $32 in the sheet but according to the site he has been going for $40.7. Any idea what the issue is?
Luke Gloeckner
03/06/2019 at 5:25 PMThe site values are taken in based on the league settings they advertise they are for (usually a 12 team league with certain roster settings). When you input your league values, the site values are adjusted to fit your league type (if you have more or less teams or a bigger or smaller roster, for instance, it will affect those initial values).

03/06/2019 at 6:08 PMThanks for your continued work. Is there anyway you could incorporate any conditional formatting in the future? I would love to highlight certain categories when values are high or age since I’m in a keeper league. Unfortunately it is a protected page 🙂
Thanks again!
Matt
03/06/2019 at 6:43 PMWow this is incredible work! I don’t happen to have Excel anymore (only Sheets on my Mac) and it isn’t bringing over all the formulas. Does anyone know if its possible to download this straight into Google Sheets without it hitting the computer? Thanks!
Chuck
03/06/2019 at 6:49 PMHere’s another idea for the next update. When using the search button to find a player, could that player’s row then be highlighted in yellow? Not sure how difficult that might be to implement, but if you can do it, it will help that player’s numbers stand out better.
Chris
03/06/2019 at 7:57 PMThanks for all of this. One possible bug… the expert rankings for ESPN – T. Cockcroft don’t populate in the draft tab when selected.
Chris
03/06/2019 at 8:09 PMAlso, in the player comparison tab, the line is blank for your custom projections.
Chuck
03/06/2019 at 10:17 PMI just noticed that saves aren’t showing up on the Roto Auction sheet. It’s using the Special Blend.w/Steamer Replacements.
Chuck
03/06/2019 at 10:18 PMAnd when trying to sort by saves, the hitters are mixed in also.
Luke Gloeckner
03/06/2019 at 10:20 PMSomeone asked me to change the abbreviation for Saves from S to SV. The old abbreviation likely came through in your save/load. You may need to go back to Settings page and choose SV instead of S. I will try to think of a more elegant fix in the morning.
Chuck
03/06/2019 at 10:26 PMThat seemed to do the trick for the Your Roto Auction and the team pages, but I’m still getting nothing (not even zeros) in the Projected Standings tab with the Stats displayed.
Luke Gloeckner
03/06/2019 at 10:27 PMYeah indeed. That’s what I was told by the others who pointed it out. I’ll look into it tomorrow.
Luke Gloeckner
03/07/2019 at 1:40 PMShould be addressed in version 1.55 that I uploaded today.
GaryL
03/09/2019 at 11:16 AMYes, S came thru in my save/load. Changing it back to SV in the settings fixed the issue of Saves not displaying in the Stats.

03/07/2019 at 3:01 PMIs there a way to add our own players? (Mackenzie Gore, Royce Lewis, etc. )
Sonny
03/07/2019 at 5:42 PMUnless I’m missing something, Kikuchi not showing up when using the special blend with steamer replacements? He only seems to show up when using Davenport and shows up as a reliever.
Also, the Mr. Cheatsheet Special Blend projections seem to be way off in the AL auction sheet. I know you wrote you’re working on it, but just wanted to point out the values are greatly inflated.
And lastly, is the default “special blend w/steamer replacements” projections a blend of all the projection systems combined? Or is it your own mixed with Steamer?
Thanks for the great work! Much appreciated.
Hank
03/07/2019 at 6:22 PMDo you expect the Special Blend post to come this weekend or will it likely be a bit longer? I’m trying to decide if I should expect to have it available for my Sunday night draft or if I should move on to plan B. Great work as always!
Luke Gloeckner
03/07/2019 at 6:38 PMI don’t want to over-promise anything but I do hope that it’ll be ready this weekend. I plan to post my sleeper hitters tomorrow, finish up my analysis of past year projections after that and then apply some tweaks to the special blend projections after that. If all goes to plan, I’d hope it would up on Sunday morning or earlier. But we’ll see.

03/07/2019 at 7:48 PMHi Luke, really appreciate the work! I have used your cheat sheet for a couple drafts and my league is always asking me throughout the draft what the standings are looking like. I think they all enjoy it.
I think it would be helpful in the players notes tab to have other options to sort by such as ADP or rankings instead of just alphabetical. I feel like it would be easier to identify players you may want to reach for or pass on based on their ADP.
Thanks for the consideration and keep up the good work.
Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 12:53 PMThat’s so awesome that your league is asking you for the live standings, haha. That brings me joy. But, yeah, that’s a cool idea and I’ll see if I can make it happen.
Gregory Godshall
03/08/2019 at 11:06 AMHey Luke, love your cheatsheets. I had a quick question about position adjusted WERTH. Does that recalculate based on keepers selected, or as players are drafted? Or is it just a static value based on all of the players?
Thanks,
Greg
Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 12:44 PMSo, yeah, the WERTH values get calculated after you enter your league settings. They are based off your league values and roster size and such. But they don’t recalculate throughout the draft. They are a static value for your league.
Ethan
03/08/2019 at 11:30 AMHello all,
I have a theoretical question about how to best use the information provided here, more specifically how WERTH values work. The WERTH values for a catcher are obviously way way down the list. But at some point you’re likely going to draft a catcher. They all have negative WERTH scores which I understand means they’re a negative relative to average players in the league. But many have their Position adjusted WERTH score which I understand is relative to average catchers in the league. My question is how do you value the draft position of a catcher knowing that Buster Posey has negative value compared to most players, but he’s pretty clearly a positive asset compared to most catchers? How do you adjust the player rankings to account for the difference between Total WERTH and Position Adjusted WERTH? Thanks, Ethan
Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 12:54 PMGreat question. It’s certainly an elegant dance between considering position scarcity versus considering the best overall player. I haven’t mastered just one definitive way to handle it and treat each draft a little differently, based on the league. I’d be interested to hear if any other readers have their own ideas.

03/08/2019 at 12:33 PMHi, as I’ve said before, this is very great work. I understand that player notes won’t forward using the Save/Load sheets. However, I am finding that my League’s team names, budget, and categories aren’t being updated either.
Besides copying the save/load sheet into the newer version, is there something that I must do to trigger the values rolling forward?
Thanks,

Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 12:43 PMHmm, I can’t recreate that issue. I have one idea on what could cause it but I’m curious… After pasting the data onto the Save/Load page, do you actually see the Team Names showing up in cells F22 and below there?
Jack Gunther
03/08/2019 at 12:45 PMYes, I can see the parameters (Team Names, etc).
I don’t mind copying them in again and updating the other settings, just thought you should know about this.
Would you like me to reply to your email with a copy of the spreadsheet? I did add an additional sheet for my Auction Budget.

Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 12:51 PMGotcha. My guess is that something triggered the code behind the scenes to stop running. If you click on the Make Pick button on the Your Roto Auction page, it might reawaken the code and then you can try pasting the data again. I’m just taking a shot in the dark here though. If that doesn’t work, may be easier to just redo them, yeah.
Jack Gunther
03/08/2019 at 12:51 PMOK, my mistake, the settings didn’t populate 1.5 but they do populate 1.55. (Too bad I spend all of that time updating the player notes in 1.5)
Jack Gunther
03/08/2019 at 12:58 PMOne last question. Has the player pool changed between v1.5 and v1.55? If not, can I copy the prev Player Notes sheet to move that info into 1.55 or am I risking starting WWIII? 😉
thanks

Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 1:01 PMHaha, you should be good. No players were added during that time.
Jack Gunther
03/08/2019 at 1:19 PMThanks for the feedback, unfortunately that sheet is protected, so I can’t past in the values without a password. I’ll just update the settings in v1.5 and try to make it work, unless an update comes out soon that allows pasting of notes (Drafting Monday night)
thanks,

03/08/2019 at 1:38 PMAwesome work as always. One small thing I noticed was that Felipe Vasquez was hard to find on the players tab because alphabetically he was with the R’s presumably because of his name change last year.

03/08/2019 at 7:07 PMHas anybody figured out how to upload these into Google Sheets without losing all the formulas and good stuff?
Luke Gloeckner
03/08/2019 at 7:08 PMUnfortunately, I can tell you that it won’t be possible. There’s some coding within Excel to make these run the way they do and Google Sheets lacks the same capability.

03/08/2019 at 11:42 PMSilly question, but what’s really the difference in positional rankings between the auction and draft cheatsheets? I tend to like using the auction values for my draft, so I’m wondering if this is something I should keep doing or not. Pros or cons to using it for a draft?
Dick Heberton
03/09/2019 at 10:52 AMGreat work on these spreadsheets Luke! One issue I’ve encountered is getting the correct Yahoo projected values to show up. For example, Trout is showing as $50 value on the Yahoo site, but shows up as $43 on “Your Roto Auction” worksheet. I’ve tried changing the position and scoring settings, but that has no effect. The only way I can find to get them to show up correctly is to input $300 as the budget rather than the normal $260. But of course, that changes the Cheatsheet Projected Value. Is there any way to fix this?
Also, it would be great to get the Yahoo Avg Cost data too. Thanks!
Michael Suhr
03/09/2019 at 12:22 PMI’ve caught some very minor grammatical errors and differences in the Roto Sheet:
– Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is spelled incorrectly and is missing his suffix. Acuña’s suffix is missing too.
– Jacob Lamb goes by Jake.

03/10/2019 at 5:00 PMI’m having an issue with the keeper page — seems like the first five columns under “keeper player” and “to which team” don’t add to the keeper tracker. Will this affect them being assigned or is it just an accounting function that won’t make a difference for the rest of the program?
hank
03/11/2019 at 12:04 AMI had the same issue. Assign keepers, click reset draft, and then click assign keepers again and you should be good.

03/10/2019 at 7:45 PMI’m still not seeing any way to sort by Pos Adj. WERTH, only by regular WERTH. I thought the option was added in the latest update, am I missing it? Tried downloading the link a few times from multiple different pages on the site…
Ken
03/13/2019 at 1:18 AMI am not even seeing the ability to sort by WERTH; how do you do that?
Ken
03/13/2019 at 3:07 AMOh, I am referring to being able to sort the ‘Positions’ sheet by WERTH instead of ADP. (not the Your Roto Draft page)
Dom

03/12/2019 at 4:30 PMHey, thanks for all the hard work, Luke!
Is anyone else having an issue with no stats showing up beyond about Row 276? For instance, in my 1.55 mixed league auction sheet sorted by original projected auction value, the last player with listed stats is Keon Broxton. Matt Adams downward is just blank. Really screwing up the projected standings in my sheet. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

03/13/2019 at 2:00 PMHi! I’m checking out the sheet for the first time this year. I noticed an issue on the auction sheet (v1.55) where it is unable for a team to pick multiple players in a row. The sheet starts acting strange – the auction log will sometimes show the players picked correctly, but other sheets (such as roster or team projections) will not show the subsequent players from appearing.
FWIW I’m using office for Mac.
Chuck
03/13/2019 at 5:28 PMI just downloaded the Roto Auction 1.60, copied in my saved stuff from 1.55, and Chris Sale did a magical disappearing trick! Looks like Stanton is gone too.
Luke Gloeckner
03/13/2019 at 5:32 PMThat’s peculiar! I can’t even think of what might have done that. I won’t be home until later but I’ll check it out then.
Chuck
03/13/2019 at 5:39 PMOk, so they didn’t disappear, but they appear as drafted, with the drafted team being 0. Weird. I can fix that easily.

03/13/2019 at 11:57 PMHey Luke, I’m not sure if using Google Sheets is the issue. But I’m unable to populate any of Categories under settings. Even the default ones are flagged as invalid and out of the specified range.

03/14/2019 at 12:02 AMThat’s correct; this is not compatible with Google Sheets unfortunately. Sorry about that.

03/14/2019 at 12:39 AMThanks Luke! On the Points sheet if you elect 1 LF, 1 CF and 1 RF in settings, when you go to the ” Only Show” drop down, there is no RF option. Any chance of a quick fix? Thank you.

03/15/2019 at 8:52 PMThank you for this spreadsheet! I can’t wait to use it.
I notice that when I choose “Sort by Expert Rankings,” several players drop way down the list. Like Mike Trout drops to the 800’s, even though it clearly shows that he is number 1. Did I do something wrong?

03/15/2019 at 9:33 PMWas this the roto draft cheatsheet? Try re-downloading v1.61, if so, because I just put in a quick fix for that.

03/18/2019 at 9:15 PMHey Luke, great stuff thanks. 2 quick questions on the auction sheet – Is there a quick way to change positions for players who are already drafted? Is there a way to look up players in the auction tab other than scrolling down within a position?
Luke Gloeckner
03/20/2019 at 5:56 PMYup, you can change positions for players that are already drafted on the Rosters tab or from the Auction tab, if you are showing drafted player. You can also choose to show only players at a certain position with the drop-down options at the top, yeah.
paul elias
03/20/2019 at 2:05 PMHey Luke, I use yor speadsheet every year and love it. However, the latest version requires a password to unlock. Is that right?
Luke Gloeckner
03/20/2019 at 5:57 PMPassword to unlock the sheets or a password to open? You shouldn’t need a password to do anything in particular, no.

03/20/2019 at 5:14 PMDuring drafts i like to print off a few pages to keep track of who is available and who has been selected. Is there a way I can do this by either exporting or formatting the excel sheets to either Word or a PDF file? Thanks in advance!

03/21/2019 at 1:33 PMI’m still trying to wrap my head around when I would want to use the pos adj WERTH vs. WERTH.
Presumably within a particular position, the two are interchangeable.
If I am deciding who to draft next and I need two fill two spots at two different positions (is. 1B and OF), it makes sense to me to use pos adj since it accounts for scarcity.
If I am looking to fill a “DH/Util” position, my gut is saying it makes sense to use WERTH and not pos adj WERTH, right?
If I am looking to draft an optimal team, I’d be looking to maximize WERTH and not pos adj WERTH, right?
Chuck
03/22/2019 at 4:48 PMHi Luke,
I’ve got another idea for the sheets that maybe you could add for next season. Would it be possible to pick our scoring categories, but then also be able to pick some other fields we might want to see? These could be listed after the scoring categories. I’m thinking I might want to see K/9 for pitchers, and AB for hitters, amongst others. Obviously, if I select them as scoring categories, it’s going to mess up the values and the projected standings. If you think it’s a decent idea, and easily doable, could you add it to your to-do list for next year? Although if you could make it happen before next weekend, then I highly encourage you to do so, but I don’t expect it, for sure. 🙂
Matt Hooker
03/22/2019 at 5:45 PMHey sorry if this has been asked or answered before but do you log your cheatsheet updates anywhere we can view? One issue I had on version 1.55 (I think) was when setting keepers…the sheet would go ahead and pick the 1st picks draft pick. Repro Steps are : Add all 4 keepers for a team, then repeat until you have added 5 teams…then submit the keepers and view the draft pick page.
Luke Gloeckner
03/22/2019 at 5:47 PMThat should be fixed in this version. The log of updates are on the Credits tab.

03/22/2019 at 8:51 PMWhen trying to paste in the save/load tab in 1.7 I receive this error “This action won’t work on multiple selections.”
Brad
03/24/2019 at 10:41 AMI had the same issue. You have to unselect the fields on the old sheet before pasting on the new one. Weird Excel glitch.
Luke Gloeckner
03/29/2019 at 11:16 AMThis is good to know! I had no idea why people were getting that error sometimes since I couldn’t recreate it. That helps me when other people may bring it up.
Chuck
03/23/2019 at 9:34 PMI can confirm an issue with the 1.70 roto auction sheets, where trying to change the position of a player brings up a box indicating it wasn’t able to do it (runtime error 1004). I thought maybe the problem was because the player was already drafted, so I deleted the player from the auction log, When the player re-appeared on the sheet, his position had been changed to what I wanted, but then when I tried to put him on a team, it didn’t take.
