2012 Roto Auction Cheatsheet | Initial Release

The cheatsheets keep on coming! Today, I introduce the first roto auction fantasy baseball cheatsheet from this here website. For all of you auctioneers out there, this handy little spreadsheet will serve you well. As opposed to just looking at ADP data and selecting who drafted who, you’ll be looking at projected dollar values based on your league settings and selecting who picked who and what they paid for them. You’ll be able to track your team and everyone’s budgets within the spreadsheet as well. There’s more information packed into this little spreadsheet than you can shake a metaphorical stick at!

Here’s the basics info you need to know about these spreadsheets as I’ve gone over previously:

When opening up the spreadsheet, you may be asked to enable macros. Please enable macros as that is the only way this spreadsheet can work! You will then be presented with a form to fill out where you can enter all sorts of information about your unique league settings and what projection systems, expert rankings and expert dollar values you want displayed. You can always change this info later! If you just want to look at the sheet, you can just close that form and start looking around.

Within the Draft Central tab, you have all of the draftable players and their WERTH roto values (estimated points gained in standings for owning the player over average fantasy starter), their projected stats and what their auction value would be based on your settings and the current money in the total pool. At this point, you can click on the Customize button to choose whether you want to hide certain data or hide players as they’re drafted. During the draft, you can select who drafted each player by clicking on the box next to each player’s name and selecting the team and then putting the winning bid in as well. This will update the Live Standings and Team Summary tabs. You can also choose how you want to sort the cheatsheet at any time on this page.

On the Live Standings tab, this will take into account the projected starters for each team based on your league settings then it will display the standings based on that info and it will also display the team budget. On the Team Summary tab, you can view who has been drafted by each team and see who is currently projected as a starter or bench player on those teams. Finally, you can view the Credits & Glossary tab to see where the data is coming from and to find out what the various parts of the spreadsheet may mean.

Data included for this release:

  • CAIRO projections
  • RotoChamp projections
  • Fangraphs Fan projections
  • CBS Sportsline auction values
  • RotoChamp auction values
  • ESPN rankings
  • RotoChamp rankings
  • Roto Summit rankings
  • Combined rankings (average of available rankings)

Unique features in the auction cheatsheet:

  • Auction values that change based on your league settings and update as your draft occurs (when someone overpays for a player, it drops the value for all other players because the total pool of money was reduced more than expected)
  • View expert auction values that are adjusted to your league settings and thus more relevant to you
  • Check team budgets throughout the draft with ease

This is unmarked territory for the cheatsheet so I want all of you auctioneers to test it out and let me know if something isn’t working right. I’m admittedly not the best beta tester in the world and want to make sure everything is working perfectly come draft day.

Hi – thanks for providing this. I can't seem to enter the winning bid amount. I get an error message stating that the cell is protected. When I attempt to unprotect the sheet it asks for a password. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Oh man, woops. That's evidence of me being a crappy beta tester! I've uploaded the correct version that will let you update the winning bid amount. If you click the link again, the new version should be there. Thanks for the heads up.

oh and on the pitching side Complete Games and Shutouts

Thank you, sir. And, yup, I can throw those in there. I'm going to be doing an update soon (once some new projections come out in the next day or two here) and I was going to throw in Innings Pitched as a pitching category already so I can get those added too.

I'll need to see if Shutouts and Complete Games are offered in the projections that I'm using but I can probably figure out a solution if they're not.

Hey, I know Ive asked alot already, but if you are going to add in 2b and 3b, would it be too much trouble to add a Total Bases cat too?

Also, wanted to let you know of a bug, I chose 14 teams, and Total and Loses in the overall projected standings on the live standings Tab doesnt fill in.

Also, a question. Will you be incorporating Yahoo ADP, Projections, and AAV now that they are available?

Also, one other thing (maybe its a bug), When I sort by Proj Value, then sort by Werth Rank, it seems to change the Proj Value. Why would a sort change the projected value?

Whoa, good catch on that sorting bug. I'm still not 100% sure why it was happening but got it corrected. For the standings tab, got that updated too. Mucho gracias.

Yeah, I can definitely add in Total Bases. That one will be easy enough. Once Yahoo, CBS and ESPN come out with their ADP and such, they'll definitely be getting added in.

I expect to start working on the next round of releases soon… Just waiting for ZiPS to release the last of their projections.

What a great tool. Can you add total bases plus walks as a category? Also, can the cheat sheet be set up for NL or AL only? Thanks.

Sounds good. I'll add that to the list of updates but that should easy enough to add.

The NL/AL only option may be a bit trickier. In the past, I put that out as an option and I'll see what I can do for this year.

Hi Luke, this is fantastic and thank you. Any chance you could add a "Utility" batter check box? Also, you have an upper limit choice for total pitchers, could you add in one for batters?

Can the setting be adjusted for NL only?

Question about adjusting $ values when entering winnig bids. In the spreadsheet, if the winning bid is greater than projected value, the remaining player projections go down (which makes sense). But if the winning bid is less than projected value, the remaining player projected values still go down. Shouldn't they go up?

Great spreadsheet! It would be awesome if there was an AL/NL only option.

Really nice job on the spreadsheet. I've got one question though. Due to the fact that i'm in a keeper league, each teams starting budget is different. Upon attempting to unprotect I too was asked for a password. Is it possible to change each teams budget? Thanks again for all of your work!

I love the spreadsheet!! I selected a 10 team league and when I enter in players picks and go to the live standings tab it shows player 10 as player 11 and doesn't update $spent, available and players.

    Thanks

This looks like a really amazing spreadsheet and just what I need. Having trouble with the xlxm format – using Excel 2003 and the file converter basically removes all the data. Anyway this can be saved with an earlier version of Excel?

Thanks for all your hard work and efforts, really appreciated.

Great sheet! How do I add players? Any way we can add a sort feature (position or AL/NL)?

Hey, all. Sorry I didn't see these comments (stupid Google not notifying me of comments).

KT: Why not select the players that were already kept and the price they are kept for? That should accomplish what you want.
Mr. Johnson: Very odd… I'll investigate this. I'm hoping to have cheatsheet updates for this weekend.
Ian: Unfortunately, I don't plan on having an Excel 2003 version for this year. Sorry about that. It takes a ton of work to get it back into that format due to some limitations with 2003 version.
Rob: No way to add players (anybody in particular that's not there?). I'm hoping to add AL-only versions this weekend.

Any chance to make it nl OR al option? I do both but none in combo.
